Collecting colorfully-toned coins has become a worldwide craze. Unfortunately, most toned coins sell for moon money (or at least most dealers ask for the moon). So where does someone go to get their toning fix on the cheap?
Answer: Canadian silver dollars. Sounds crazy, but it's true. The 1972-74 Canadian silver dollars were originally packaged in black velvet-lined cases with a thin foam insert. Over the years, the silver being in an enclosed space with the foam and velvet, and their ensuing chemical breakdown, makes for a "toning chamber". These coins can be found with almost psychedelic toning colors and patterns.
The type of toning patterns and colors that these coins obtain don't necessarily appeal to everyone. They tend to be a bit streaky or splotchy, but vary wildly in pattern. You don't get a lot of solid color toning or true rainbow color sequence. What you do find though, are toning patterns not found elsewhere.
The bonus is that these coins can be found CHEAP!... although more people seem to be catching on, dagnabit. These coins have more than 1/3 of an ounce of silver in them, and can often be purchased for close to their melt (silver content) value. Even PCGS and NGC certified examples can be obtained for $30-80 relatively easily.
These coins are not for sale.
